How to Investigate Between the Lines
Before you accept an interview (and certainly before you accept an offer) put on your detective hat:
Conduct Informational Interviews: Find people on LinkedIn who currently hold (or recently left) similar roles at the company. Reach out politely: "I'm looking into a role at [Company] and love your background. Would you be open to a 10-minute chat about the team culture?"
Follow the Leadership: Look up your potential manager or the executive team. Do they post on LinkedIn or Twitter? What do they value? A CEO who constantly posts about "hustle culture" at 2:00 AM tells you everything you need to know about company boundaries.
Analyze the Financials and News: Search the company name under Google News. Have they had recent layoffs? Did they just acquire a competitor? A company in growth mode feels very different from a company in survival mode.
The Bottom Line
Your skills are valuable, and your time is limited. Don’t trust a company based solely on a list of bullet points they posted online. By looking at the context, the people, and the reality behind the curtain, you ensure your next career move is a step forward, not just a step into a different frying pan.
